US Seeks Global Trade Wins From Switzerland Deals to Western Hemisphere Push

The United States is actively engaged in a series of crucial trade discussions across multiple continents, with recent meetings highlighting a strategic focus on bolstering economic ties and reshaping global commerce. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer confirmed on Thursday that his officials have been meeting with representatives from Switzerland this week, while also conducting ongoing discussions with trade counterparts from Mexico, Central America, and various other nations across the Western Hemisphere.

A potential trade agreement with Switzerland holds significant promise for American manufacturing, according to remarks made by Greer on Fox Business Network's "Mornings with Maria." He noted a strong enthusiasm among Swiss companies to invest substantially in key American sectors. These targeted areas include pharmaceuticals, aircraft and aircraft parts manufacturing, and even gold smelting, underscoring the diverse economic impact such a deal could generate. Greer emphasized the close nature of these conversations, which have been ongoing for several weeks, culminating in a recent White House meeting between a delegation of Swiss executives and US President Donald Trump.

The high-level Swiss delegation that met with President Trump on Tuesday included executives from prominent global companies, such as the shipping giant MSC, luxury watchmaker Rolex, investment firm Partners Group, commodities trader Mercuria, Cartier-owner Richemont, and precious metals firm MKS. Switzerland's proactive engagement in these talks is largely driven by an urgent desire to secure a trade agreement that could mitigate the impact of a substantial 39% tariff. This significant duty was imposed on Swiss imports by the Trump administration in August, representing one of the highest rates levied as part of the President's broader global trade reset.

Beyond the European frontier, USTR Greer confirmed that discussions are also progressing with various trading partners throughout the Western Hemisphere, including nations in Central America and Mexico. These regional engagements are integral to President Trump's evolving trade strategy, which Greer described as "continuing to take shape." He referenced the President's recent success in striking deals with several Southeast Asian and East Asian countries last week, indicating a consistent approach that will extend to the Western Hemisphere and other regions throughout the current month.

In a related development concerning regional trade, Greer's office announced a change in the schedule for a key hearing on the US-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade agreement. The public hearing, which was initially set for November 17, has been rescheduled to take place from December 3 to 5, allowing for further preparation and deliberation on this critical trilateral pact.
