US Slashes Swiss Tariffs Dramatically After Initial Deal
The United States and Switzerland are currently in the process of implementing a significant reduction in US tariffs on Swiss imports. This move will see the tariff rate drop from a high of 39% to 15%. The Swiss government confirmed this development following the sealing of an initial deal last week, with a preliminary agreement officially reached on Friday between the two nations.
This upcoming tariff cut comes more than three months after US President Donald Trump imposed the 39% import duties on Switzerland, which represented the highest rates in Europe. The imposition of these elevated tariffs had sparked considerable concern across various Swiss industries, most notably impacting the prestigious luxury watch sector, which relies heavily on international trade.
Regarding the timeline for this reduction, Swiss Economy Minister Guy Parmelin informed the Aargauer Zeitung newspaper in its Tuesday edition that the government anticipates it will take approximately 10 to 12 working days for the new, lower tariffs to be fully integrated into the system. However, Minister Parmelin refrained from providing a precise date for the full implementation.
Further elaborating on the process, a spokesperson for the Swiss economy ministry stated on Wednesday that both Switzerland and the US are committed to implementing the reduced US tariff rate as swiftly as possible. The spokesperson noted that the "technical implementation will take a few days" and assured the public that an official announcement would be made once the process is complete.
