US Tariffs Hit Vietnamese Footwear Exports Hardest
Vietnam's footwear exports to the United States experienced a significant downturn in September, plummeting by 27% to reach $611 million. This sharp decline marked the steepest reduction observed across all sectors, a trend largely attributed to the implementation of new tariffs by the U.S. government, as indicated by recent customs data.
Beyond footwear, other key Vietnamese export categories also faced considerable challenges during the same period. Textile exports registered a notable monthly drop of 20%, reflecting the impact on another major industry. Similarly, shipments of phones and their associated components saw a substantial decrease, falling by 24.38%, according to figures released by the customs authority.
Despite these significant sectoral declines, Vietnam's overall exports to the United States showed a more modest reduction, edging down just 1.5% to a total of $13.7 billion in September. This relatively small overall dip was primarily cushioned by strong performances in other export categories, specifically robust gains recorded in both coffee and machinery shipments, which helped to offset the sharper contractions seen elsewhere, according to the latest data.
