Valentino Foundation Unveils Monumental Mirror Sculpture in Rome to Launch New Cultural Initiative

A significant new cultural initiative, PM23, recently made its debut in Rome, launching its inaugural project with the support of the esteemed Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti Foundation. The initiative was unveiled on Monday with the grand reveal of a monumental sculpture by acclaimed Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos, positioned prominently in the historic heart of the Eternal City.

The striking artwork, titled 'Venus: I’ll Be Your Mirror,' was dramatically uncovered in Piazza Mignanelli, a locale steeped in history and home to the iconic headquarters of the Valentino fashion brand. This colossal mirrored Venetian-style mask is a testament to intricate craftsmanship, composed of 255 baroque bronze mouldings and an impressive 510 overlapping mirrors. Designed to provoke introspection, the piece encourages viewers to contemplate both individual and collective identity, creating a captivating visual dialogue against the backdrop of the surrounding Renaissance architecture, adorned in hues of ochre, yellow, violet, and red, and the nearby world-renowned Spanish Steps.

PM23 itself emerges as a vibrant new cultural hub, meticulously conceived through an urban regeneration project generously backed by the Fondazione Valentino Garavani e Giancarlo Giammetti. This foundation was established by the legendary founders of Rome’s most celebrated couture house, demonstrating their enduring commitment to the city. The PM23 initiative is thoughtfully designed to interweave contemporary art with the world of fashion and active social engagement, ultimately aiming to cultivate beauty, impart meaning, and strengthen the connection citizens have with the rich tapestry of Rome.

The unveiling of 'Venus: I’ll Be Your Mirror' signifies merely the commencement of a broader citywide artistic journey. Over the coming weeks, this ambitious cultural program is set to extend its reach, unfolding across a multitude of other distinguished locations throughout Rome. A release from PM23 underscored the foundation's philosophy, stating, "Through this initiative, the Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti Foundation renews its commitment to promoting an active form of philanthropy – one that builds relationships and generates value through culture."

The house of Valentino was founded by Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti in 1960, establishing its roots firmly in Rome. The pioneering duo stepped down from their roles in 2008, following which the brand experienced several changes in ownership. Today, the iconic label is under the control of Mayhoola, an investment vehicle associated with the Qatari royal family. In the fiscal year 2024, Valentino reported robust annual revenues, reaching €1.35 billion.
