Vivienne Westwood's son launches Soho's new cultural beacon for independent designers

Joe Corré, a notable figure in the fashion world as co-founder of Agent Provocateur and son of the late, iconic designer Vivienne Westwood, has unveiled his latest venture: The Light House. Located in the vibrant heart of London’s Soho, this innovative concept blends a sophisticated lingerie, eveningwear, and accessories boutique with the exclusive ambiance of a private members’ club. This unique establishment promises to be more than just a retail space, aiming to create a distinct cultural hub.

Situated on Berwick Street, The Light House occupies the historic premises of a lighting specialist that served the community for over two centuries, a heritage that inspired its evocative name. In an interview with The Times, Corré articulated his vision for the space, stating his desire for it to become "a meeting spot… like a beacon in this sea of sameness." His overarching goal is to champion and support the intricate craftsmanship of independent designers, providing a crucial platform for their work in a bustling urban landscape.

The journey to create The Light House has been a seven-year undertaking. Corré acquired the dilapidated 19th-century space after the previous lighting business ceased operations. The building was in a significant state of disrepair, necessitating extensive restoration. Corré personally contributed to much of the renovation work, while also enlisting specialist artisans to tackle the more complex aspects of revitalizing the historic structure, breathing new life into a forgotten piece of Soho's past.

Now open to the public, The Light House features an exquisitely curated selection of items from independent artists and makers. The offerings include avant-garde footwear by Natacha Marro, distinctive coats by Benedict Lamb, unique upcycled lighting pieces crafted by Joe Rush, and striking latex creations by Atsuko Kudo. Corré's deliberate focus is on designers whose work, often characterized by its unique materiality or intricate detailing, might not easily translate or find a suitable outlet through conventional e-tail platforms, ensuring their artistry receives the physical presentation it deserves in the heart of London.

Beyond its retail function, The Light House is designed as a dynamic community space, equipped with an area that can be closed off for private functions and events. Corré shared with the newspaper his ambitious plans for this versatile space, envisioning it as a venue for a diverse array of activities. These include life drawing classes, captivating performances, intimate book readings, thought-provoking exhibitions, engaging talks, and even activist meetings, positioning The Light House as a multifaceted center for culture, creativity, and community engagement.
