Walmart lands in Africa with South African store opening and sixty minute delivery challenge

Walmart has officially launched its first store on the African continent, opening its doors in South Africa on Saturday. This significant move marks the U.S. retail giant's debut in the region, signaling its ambition to carve out a substantial presence in a highly competitive market.

The grand opening drew considerable public interest, with over a hundred eager shoppers queuing for hours outside the new store. Many were keen to capitalize on Walmart's signature "Everyday Low Prices" and to access a range of international products that are not readily available elsewhere in South Africa. Among the sought-after items were designer counter-top air fryers by Drew Barrymore, popular Labubu dolls, and Dr. Pepper sodas. Refilwe Mabale, a shopper interviewed by Reuters, specifically mentioned her quest for "Labubu," a children's toy she noted was difficult to procure locally.

Beyond unique international offerings, some customers were also strategically eyeing the opening during the Black Friday weekend, hoping to secure advantageous deals. Tshepo Rambau, 44, told Reuters he was in the queue with the intention of purchasing tech products, such as WIFI extenders, expressing his hope that they would be more affordably priced at Walmart.

In a direct challenge to existing market players, Walmart is also introducing a sixty-minute online delivery service. This initiative positions the retailer in immediate competition with Checkers' highly successful Sixty60 on-demand delivery service, operated by South Africa's largest grocery retailer, Shoprite.

Andrea Albright, executive vice president of Walmart, articulated the broader vision behind this expansion. In a statement, she emphasized that the opening transcended a mere business milestone, representing a profound commitment to "helping customers save money and live better by consistently delivering the lowest total cost for the basket of products they need." This underscores Walmart's core value proposition as it enters the new market.

The new store, strategically located in Roodepoort, west of Johannesburg, is already contributing to the local economy. The retailer has confirmed the creation of 80 new jobs and has actively fostered collaborations with 15 local small- and medium-sized enterprises, embedding itself within the community from its inception.
