Winter Footwear: Brands Blend Performance and Style in Unexpected Collaborations
This season witnesses a compelling trend in winter footwear: collaborations that seamlessly blend performance with high style. Several major alliances are reimagining existing models, adapting them for both urban environments and the challenges of winter weather. We’ll spotlight three key partnerships driving this movement.
Carhartt WIP and Salomon have joined forces for a second collaborative collection, building upon the foundation laid by their initial project. The partnership is rooted in shared values of functionality, durability, and performance, all applied to Salomon’s iconic X-ALP silhouette.
Carhartt Work In Progress, founded in 1994 as the European extension of the American workwear brand Carhartt (established in 1889), has successfully redefined workwear for a contemporary audience. The brand has become deeply embedded in urban cultures – from hip-hop and skateboarding to the techno scenes of Detroit and Berlin, and the world of contemporary art – and now operates over 100 boutiques globally, frequently collaborating with leading fashion and streetwear names.
Salomon, originating in the French Alps in 1947, is a leading innovator in outdoor equipment and technical lifestyle gear. Based in Annecy, the brand’s designs for footwear, apparel, and equipment for mountain sports are informed by the expertise of designers, engineers, and athletes.
For this collaboration, Carhartt WIP has reimagined the X-ALP, a model originally designed for demanding outdoor conditions. The resulting trainer features robust grained leather, suede accents, and Carhartt WIP’s signature camouflage pattern. The X-ALP Carhartt WIP is designed for versatility, embodying the fusion of outdoor technology and urban aesthetics.
The X-ALP Carhartt WIP became available on December 18th through the brands’ websites, boutiques, and select retail partners, retailing for €160.
Nike has partnered with Vaquera for an unexpected collaboration centered around the Air Max Dn8, Nike’s latest innovation featuring Dynamic Air technology, which launched on December 8th. This pairing brings together Nike’s technological prowess and the deliberately unconventional aesthetic of the New York-based label.
Vaquera, founded in 2013 by Bryn Taubensee and Patric DiCaprio, has quickly become a cult favorite in the independent fashion scene. Evolving from blog-era experimentation to appearances on the Paris Fashion Week runways, the brand gained recognition for its viral pieces, most notably its aviator-style strappy dresses.
Nike, established in 1964, continues to push the boundaries of footwear innovation. The Air Max Dn8 represents a new chapter in the evolution of its Dynamic Air technology, coupled with a distinctly contemporary design.
In this collaboration, Vaquera reinterprets the Dn8 silhouette, infusing it with the brand’s signature style. “Romanticism is a fundamental element of the Vaquera brand,” explains DiCaprio. The trainer is playfully adorned with kiss marks, a romantic motif that subverts traditional performance-footwear standards without sacrificing functionality. The result, as described by the founders, is “fashion fan fiction,” where sincerity and irony coexist.
The Nike x Vaquera Air Max Dn8 is currently available via the brands’ websites, Dover Street Market, and select retailers, priced at €200.
Inuikii and Rouje have joined forces this season to launch a limited-edition version of the iconic Classic Low winter boot, reimagined as a warm, urban, and unexpected silhouette. This collaboration explores the intersection of sportswear and Parisian elegance, bridging alpine roots with city life.
Inuikii, founded in 2013 in Zurich by Cinzia Maag and her sons Danilo and Alessio, has established itself as a leader in premium winter footwear. Primarily handcrafted in Europe, the Swiss brand prioritizes natural, sustainable materials, aiming to redefine après-ski with modern, protective, and functional designs that remain true to its alpine heritage.
Rouje, created in 2016 by Jeanne Damas, embodies an instinctive, timeless femininity, inspired by vintage references, cinematic aesthetics, and the effortless elegance of everyday Parisian life. The brand has become synonymous with a certain French *art de vivre*, blending sensuality, simplicity, and character.
For this collaboration, the two brands have revisited Inuikii’s Classic Low, adapting it for urban winter wear. The silhouette features refreshed lines, a dual lacing system, and a subtle interplay of materials and colors: chocolate nubuck, Rouje’s signature burgundy accents, and discreet branding details.
The Inuikii x Rouje Classic Low will be available from January 21st as a limited edition through both brands’ distribution channels.
