Zalando and M&S Forge Major European Logistics Partnership for Ambitious Growth
A significant development in the European retail landscape has emerged with Zalando's recent Q3 results release, highlighting a newly solidified logistics partnership with UK retail giant M&S. This enhanced collaboration builds upon a more limited association that began in 2022, where M&S utilized Zalando, About You, and Amazon to fulfill European marketplace orders. The new agreement is set to commence early next year, with Zalando's B2B logistics solution, ZEOS, taking on the crucial role of supplying M&S’s entire online direct-to-consumer business across continental Europe.
This deepening of ties between M&S and Zalando is not an isolated incident but rather indicative of a broader trend among prominent British businesses. Zalando already maintains a similar strategic partnership with another UK retail heavyweight, Next, underscoring the considerable potential these companies perceive in mainland Europe. Crucially, both M&S and Next view Zalando as the preferred logistics provider to facilitate their ambitious expansion goals in the region.
M&S's decision to significantly expand its relationship with Zalando is underpinned by compelling performance data. The retailer reported rapid online growth in the last quarter, with sales through Zalando surging by an impressive 131% compared to the previous year. The expanded partnership, leveraging Zalando's ZEOS operation, will extend its reach to 21 markets, demonstrating a clear commitment to continental European growth.
The ZEOS solution is poised to deliver a multitude of operational efficiencies and an elevated customer experience for M&S. By creating a single stock pool, ZEOS will enable superior inventory efficiency and provide an advanced order management system specifically tailored for Fashion, Home, and Beauty products. Furthermore, M&S anticipates a significantly improved online shopping experience for its customers, characterized by faster delivery and streamlined returns processes, potentially cutting delivery times by up to two to three days.
This strategic move aligns perfectly with M&S's overarching ambition for its International operations: to forge a global omnichannel business. The company aims to achieve this by leveraging the specialized expertise and robust infrastructure of strategic partners like Zalando, employing "simple, scalable operating models, which are capital-light." Through the ZEOS link, M&S projects substantial financial benefits, including an expected sales uplift of up to 30%, a significant reduction in logistics costs by up to half, and an improvement in operating margins.
Commenting on the strategic importance of this collaboration, Mark Lemming, MD of International at M&S, stated, “Having reset the International business to reshape M&S for global growth, we’re focusing on bigger, better partnerships, which enable us to bring the best of M&S to the world.” This sentiment underscores M&S's commitment to strategic alliances as a cornerstone of its international growth strategy.
